1. Does Lorillard favor government regulation of its products?
Lorillard supports additional regulation of tobacco manufacturers and products by the federal government. However, we believe that any federal oversight authority must incorporate several key components:
- It must not provide any one manufacturer a competitive advantage over another. There must be a level playing field upon which manufacturers can communicate with adult consumers.
- It must not have an inherent bias against the industry. We believe the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which assures the safety and effectiveness of foods, drugs and medicines, would ultimately move to ban the conventional cigarette product. Also, most FDA legislation that has been introduced would allow the FDA to alter what occurs naturally in the leaf.
- It must advocate the research and oversee the development of potentially reduced exposure products (PREP).
- It should codify the marketing and advertising restrictions already agreed to under the Master Settlement Agreement between the tobacco companies and the states. This should include the MSA's provisions for nationwide efforts to significantly reduce youth smoking. It must be understood that it is everyone's interest -- including federal and state governments, the public health community and tobacco manufacturers -- to be a part of a meaningful commitment to reduce youth smoking.
back to top 2. Where do I find information on Lorillard's viewpoints on smoking and its effects on health?
Lorillard.com contains a section entitled Statement on Smoking and Health under the general heading of Corporate Overview. There you will find our company's position on the health consequences of smoking, exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and addiction. You will also find direct links to some public health websites with information on these issues and ways to quit smoking. Lorillard believes that all cigarettes are dangerous and smoking can cause serious diseases, including lung cancer. Lorillard believes that adults should make informed decisions about smoking, environmental tobacco smoke and addiction. Lorillard also believes that consumers of our product should pay attention to and rely upon information provided by the U.S. Surgeon General and other public health authorities concerning the dangers of cigarette smoking.
back to top 3. What is Lorillard's position on whether kids should smoke?
Lorillard is committed to the basic principle that children should not smoke. Lorillard also is committed to preventing youth smoking in this country, and continues in its resolve to make a difference in this regard.
back to top 4. How does Lorillard address the problem of youth smoking?
As part of our corporate commitment to preventing youth smoking, as is evidenced in our corporate principles, Lorillard continues to host its own voluntary Youth Smoking Prevention Program. Lorillard's program focuses on a parental educational effort, “Real Parents. Real Answers.”, which includes a website -- http://www.RealParentsRealAnswers.com-- designed to engage parents in a dialogue with their children about why they shouldn’t smoke.
Additionally, Lorillard remains committed to curbing retail access to cigarettes through its continuing sponsorship of the “We Card” program. To date, more than 450,000 retailers across the country have pledged to display the now-familiar yellow-and-red “We Card” logo, as well as to train their employees on how best to comply with age-restriction laws.
back to top 5. Why have cigarette prices become so expensive?
State and local governments have increasingly turned to cigarettes as a means of financing their ever-burgeoning budget shortfalls. In some states, 70 to 80 percent of the price of a pack of cigarettes is made up of taxes and to cover the costs of other payments to government entities, including payments due under the Master Settlement Agreement of 1998.
It is Lorillard's opinion that increasing excise taxes on smokers constitutes a regressive tax on the working class and promotes crime and smuggling. Thus, we remain committed to fighting such increases.
back to top 6. What can I do to make my concerns heard about my rights as a smoker?
The best way to fight new taxes and laws that target you as a smoker is to contact your federal and state legislators. Let them know that you feel it is unfair to be singled out. Visit your state's legislative website to find your local legislators, or click here to visit www.house.gov and www.senate.gov to find your federal representatives.
